L2.88 A/V/N-다고 하던데 grammar = I heard from someone that...~recall something you heard from someone

Usage:
- A/V/N-다고 하던데 = -다고 하다 (citation)  +  -던데 (recollection) = recall something you heard from somebody else previously.
- Shortened form: A/V/N-다던데
- Can be used at the end of a sentence to express (1) speaker’s disagreement with the other person’s opinion or (2) speaker’s expectation of a response from the other person. (example 6-8)

Tense:

1. In declarative sentence
- 현재: A-다고 하던데 / V-(느)ㄴ다고 하던데 / N-(이)라고 하던데

- 과거: A/V-았/었다고 하던데 / N-였다고 하던데 or N-이었다고 하던데

- 미래: A/V-(으)ㄹ 거라고 하던데  /  N-일 거라고 하던데


E.g.
A: 춥다 -- 춥다고 하던데? -- 추웠다고 하던데?  -- 추울 거라고 하던데?
V: 오다 -- 온다고 하던데? -- 왔다고 하던데? -- 올 거라고 하던데?
N: 의사 -- 의사(이)라고 하던데? -- 의사였다고 하던데? -- 의사일 거라고 하던데?

2. In interrogative sentence
- 현재: A-냐고 하던데 / V-(느)ㄴ냐고 하던데 / N-(이)냐고 하던데

- 과거: A/V-았/었냐고 한던데 / N-였냐고 하던데 or N-이었냐고 하던데

- 미래: A/V-(으)ㄹ 거냐고 하던데

E.g.  
A: 춥다 -- 춥냐고 하던데? -- 추웠냐고 하던데?  -- 추울 거냐고 하던데?
V: 오다 -- 온냐고 하던데? -- 왔냐고 하던데? -- 올 거냐고 하던데?
N: 의사 -- 의사(이)냐고 하던데? -- 의사였냐고 하던데? 

3. In propositive sentence
- 긍정: V-자고 하던데
- 부정: V-지 말자고 하던데

E.g.  
보다 -- 보자고 하던데?  -- 보지 말자고 하던데?

4. In imperative sentence
- 긍정: V-(으)라고 하던데
- 부정: V-지 말라고 하던데

E.g.  
보다 -- 보라고 하던데?  -- 보지 말라고 하던데?

Examples:

1. 한강에서 불꽃놀이 축제를 한다고 하던데 같이 갈래요?
- 네, 좋아요. 정말 멋지겠네요. 같이 가요.

I heard (from my friend) that there's a fireworks festival at the Han river, shall we go together?
- Yes, that's great. It would be awesome. Let's go together.

2. 노트북을 사려고 하는데 어디에 가면 좋을까요?
- 친구들이 전자 제품을 싸게 사려면 용산에 가라고 하던데 거기에 가 보세요.

I am planning to buy a notebook but do you know where I should go?
- My friends said that if you want to buy electronics at a good price then go to YongSan.  So you should go there.

3. 오늘 점심을 어디에서 먹을 까요?
- 회사 앞에서 새로운 식당이 생겼다고 하던데 거기에 한번 가 봅시다.

Where shall we eat lunch today?
- I heard a new restaurant opened in front of our company, so let's try it once.

4. 수지 씨가 자기 생일 파티에 오라고 하던데 갈 거예요?
- 수지 씨 생일인데 당연히 가야지요.

Suzy invited us to her birthday party, so are you going?
- Of course I can’t miss her birthday.

5. 내일 추운진다던데 아이들이 감기에 걸릴까 봐 걱정이에요.

I heard that it’s cold tomorrow, so I worry that the children will catch a cold.

6. 수지 씨한테도 같이 극장에 보자고 할까요?
- 수지 씨는 요즘 바쁘다고 하던데요.

Shall we invite Suzy to go to see movie?
- But she said she has been busy these days.

7. 토니 씨가 지금 어디에 있는지 아세요?
- 아까 도서관에 간다고 하던데요.

Do you know where Tony is now?
- A while ago, he said he was going to the library.

8. 우리는 주말에 어디 놀러 갈까요?
- 주말에 형님네가 우리 집에 온다고 하던데요.
Where shall we go playing in the weekend?
- Our brother's family said they visit us this weekend.

9. 책이 인터넷에서 주문하면 더 싸다고 하던데 인터넷을 이용해 보세요.

If you buy books from Internet, it is much cheaper, so try to use Internet.

10. 토니 씨가 한국어능력시험이 언제냐고 하던데 혹시 알라요?
- 다음 달 15일이에요.

Tony asked me when is the TOPIK exam, so do you know when?
- It’s 15th of the next month.

11. 우리는 오늘 저녁에 뭐 먹을까요?
- 수지 씨가 며칠 전부터 불고기 먹으로 가자고 하던데 불고기 먹잡시다.

What shall we eat in the evening?
- Suzy said several days ago that we will eat bulgogi, so let’s eat bulgogi.

12. 우리 방학에 어디로 여행 갈까요?
- 밍 씨가 베트남의 하롱베이가 아주 아름답다고 하던데 거기에 갈까요?

Where shall we go in school vacation?
- Minh said that Halong bay in Vietnam is very beautiful, shall we go there?
